Employee Definitions

Information on the site is divided into different sections according to the type of employee. There are two separations used in the organization of the information: Staff or Faculty, and Part-Time or Full-Time employees.

Employees are classified as follows (See Policy 301 for more info):

  • Full-Time Employee: those individuals whose employment status is expected to last nine (9) consecutive months or longer, working 75 percent or more of the normal possible annual working hours for that position. This includes individuals working consistently 30 hours or more weekly on a 12-month basis, and those working 75 percent or more for at least nine (9) consecutive months in jobs where the normal possible working hours are less than 2,080 hours (full-time annual equivalent).
    • Full-Time Faculty: a full-time employee whose primary objective is the teaching of University students, as well as performing service, scholarship, and research associated with instruction. See Policy 631: Faculty Categories.
    • Full-Time Staff: a full-time employee whose primary objective is nonteaching, e.g. administer campus organization and functions (President, Vice-Presidents, Directors, etc.) or support campus infrastructure and programs (exempt staff, non-exempt staff, hourly staff, seasonal/temporary staff, etc.).
  • Part-Time Employee: those individuals whose employment/work is 74 percent or less of the normal possible annual working hours for that position; those whose employment status is expected to be of short duration; and those whose employment is of an intermittent nature.
    • Auxiliary Faculty (i.e. Part-Time Instructors): a part-time employee whose primary objective is the teaching of University students on a semester-by-semester or year-by year basis. Includes part-time faculty, adjunct faculty, clinical faculty, term-appointed faculty, etc. See Policy 631.
    • Part-Time Staff: a part-time employee whose primary objective is non-teaching of University students but rather support campus infrastructure and programs. See Policy 310: Part-Time Employment

The Onboarding portal is organized into main sections according to the employee’s timeline:

  • New to Utah Tech features a special message from President Williams,
  • Getting Started features information that the employee will need for their first month at the university,
  • New Trailblazers entails the information they will need during the first six months of employment,
  • Trailblazing lists information and resources that employees will need for their first year and beyond.

On each of these pages, information is organized as follows:

  • Topic
    • Information for all employees
    • Information specific to certain employees; For example:
      • Full-Time Faculty
      • Full-Time Staff
      • Part-Time Staff
      • Part-Time Instructors

Additionally, there are supporting pages that provide information outside of the direct onboarding process.

  • New to Southern Utah provides resources to employees that are moving to the area in order to work. The page includes resources for moving, information on the local area, and even a slang dictionary.
  • New to Higher Ed gives an in-depth explanation of different terms and processes to employees that may be entering higher education from another field.
  • Supervisor Resources gives supervisors the information that they need to assist in the onboarding of new employees, as well as the resources needed to onboard a new supervisor.
